What we do

1. Connecting the Community

ANYWAA COMMUNITY exists to bring people together across cultural, generational, and socio-economic lines. Rooted in the values of unity and belonging, we provide platforms for the Anywaa people and other East African immigrants in Minnesota to connect, communicate, and collaborate. Through town hall meetings, cultural festivals, interfaith gatherings, and neighborhood engagement efforts, we cultivate a strong network of relationships that promote peace, shared identity, and collective progress.

Community connection is vital in addressing isolation, cultural disintegration, and socioeconomic barriers. We recognize that many immigrants and refugees struggle to adapt while maintaining a sense of belonging. By fostering strong communal ties, we ensure that individuals feel seen, heard, and supported. Our mission is to be a bridge—not only between people but also between generations and cultures assuring that no one feels left behind in the journey of community building.

2. Fostering Relationships

At the heart of ANYWAA COMMUNITY’s work is the nurturing of healthy and meaningful relationships. We create spaces where individuals can form bonds—whether through mentorship, family support programs, or peer-led initiatives. These connections foster mutual understanding, reduce cultural and generational divides, and lay the groundwork for collective healing and progress. Our programs intentionally focus on building trust, encouraging dialogue, and strengthening the social fabric of our community.

Strong relationships are essential for resilience, especially within immigrant communities where adaptation can be challenging. We work closely with elders, youth, families, and community partners to promote values of respect, collaboration, and empathy. These relationships extend beyond program participation—they become the foundation for lifelong connections and shared responsibility in creating a vibrant, inclusive society.

3. Serving People

ANYWAA COMMUNITY is committed to compassionate service. We offer culturally responsive support to individuals and families facing life’s challenges, including housing instability, language barriers, immigration concerns, and unemployment. Our community navigators and volunteers work closely with each person to provide direct assistance and referrals to local service providers. Every act of service is guided by dignity, equity, and respect.

We don’t just react to needs—we anticipate and advocate. Our organization engages in active listening and needs assessments to ensure we’re addressing real and urgent concerns. Whether it’s helping a newly arrived refugee family find housing or connecting seniors with healthcare access, our mission is to serve with excellence and love. Service, to us, is not just charity, it is empowerment.

4. Youth Development

Youth are at the core of ANYWAA COMMUNITY’s vision for a stronger future. We believe that when young people are equipped with confidence, education, and a strong cultural identity, they become powerful agents of change. Our youth programs include leadership development, tutoring, college and career readiness, and cultural heritage education. Through these initiatives, we aim to build responsible, capable, and proud young leaders.

Many youths in immigrant families face unique challenges, including identity conflicts, academic pressures, and limited access to role models. We provide mentorship, safe spaces, and opportunities that affirm their experiences and encourage their dreams. By nurturing the potential within each young person, we are investing not just in their future—but in the future of our entire community.

5. Ensuring Resources

Access to critical resources can make the difference between struggle and stability. ANYWAA COMMUNITY works to ensure that no one in our community is left in the dark about the support available to them. From navigating public assistance programs to connecting individuals with legal aid, mental health services, and employment opportunities, we act as a vital resource hub. Our staff and volunteers provide guidance in multiple languages and advocate for equitable access to services.

In partnership with local governments, schools, and nonprofits, we regularly host resource fairs, distribute educational materials, and offer one-on-one support. Our goal is not only to connect people to services but to empower them with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for themselves and their families. By ensuring resource access, we strengthen both individual lives and community resilience.

6. After-School Programs

Our after-school programs provide a safe, supportive environment for children and teens during critical after-school hours. Through academic tutoring, arts and crafts, cultural education, and recreational activities, we create a balanced and enriching experience. These programs are designed to meet students where they are—helping them improve their academic performance, build self-esteem, and develop essential life skills.

Beyond academics, our after-school initiatives foster a sense of belonging and identity. We incorporate traditional music, language, and stories to help youth stay connected to their roots while navigating their place in a new culture. These programs are more than just educational—they are transformative spaces where children are encouraged to dream big, stay grounded, and grow with confidence.
